The first thing is to make sure you have the right profile in the Settings of your phone. Sometimes you think that Internet is working properly on your phone because you can access web pages in the phone’s web browser. But there are in fact two different types of APN (Access Point Name): one for full Internet connection and another that is a more limited set, often used for WAP only. The latter generally works for the phone web browser whereas Java applications require the full Internet connection.
You must have signed up for the right data plan with your carrier: it should not be a WAP only plan, but cover a full Internet access.
You can then have the APN settings sent for free to your phone by SMS. Carriers often provide this service on their web site. But they do not always clearly differentiate the WAP-only from the full Web profile. It is therefore highly recommended to use the same service provided directly by the phone manufacturers.
For Sony Ericsson:

Choose your phone model, country and operator, then enter your phone number to receive the settings by SMS. Follow the instructions given in the SMS to install the settings into your phone.
Once the APN profile has been properly downloaded to your phone, you still need to check that Java applications on your Sony Ericsson use this profile: goto Settings/Connectivity/Internet settings/Settings for Java and check that the APN or Internet profile that you just downloaded is properly set.
For Nokia:

Choose : Get Standard Settings, choose your model, then Select the service: Internet, choose your country, Network and Service plan, then enter your phone number to receive the settings by SMS. Follow the instructions given in the SMS to install the settings into your phone.
Once the APN profile has been properly downloaded to your phone, you still need to check that Java applications on your Nokia use this profile: for Nokia Series 40, goto Settings/Configuration and check that the APN or Internet profile that you just downloaded is in the Preferred access pt. field, then select the profile under Default config. sett., select Details, the Items supported should include *Web and * Access point. Finally, go back to the Configuration settings and select Activ. def. in all apps, to make sure that Java apps are also using this profile. On Series 40, you can also make another verification in the Apps. menu: select Upvise, then press Options/Application access/Communication/Network access: choose any option except the Not allowed.
